To the consternation of many of you whose iPhones and iPads suddenly look a bit different, Apple departed from past practice this week and pushed out a major software update without much lead time. Briefly, what you need to know:
1. Only iPhones and iPads are affected, not Macs (yet–probably October–and we’ll let you know).
2. Since this is a major update (from 13 to 14, not from 13.6 to 13.7), it will take a while to download and install. Back up your device first (here’s how) and allow plenty of time–don’t start the update when you’re expecting a call.
3. If your device updated automatically, don’t panic:
-
The chance of technical problems is tiny
-
There are some nice features in the update, especially for those of us who have a lot of apps or use AirPods
-
You can get a quick overview of the basic changes here.
4. If your device has NOT updated automatically, and you’d prefer to wait, you can turn off automatic updates under Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
But don’t put it off forever; updates happen for a reason.
