About computers dot mom
computers dot mom was founded in 1998 by Alison Holtzschue, a working mom (and recovering Princeton English major) with 25 years of experience in software development and training.
Alison saw a growing need among educated, intelligent people who, mostly for generational reasons, missed the boat with computers. Working people may have tech help at work, kids have it at school, but if you are home, even working at home, keeping up with technology is a daunting problem.
There were plenty of other computer classes around, but most of them were too slow ("we spent the whole class learning how to click with the mouse!"), too long ("I missed week 5 and I was lost after that. . ."), or not designed to solve the kinds of problems our clients face ("I just want to get my holiday cards done--what's the best way?!).
We began with single-session, focused classes that covered everything from how to turn the computer on and off to managing digital images. The response was tremendous, and our reputation was founded on a winning combination of clear instruction, solid technical expertise, and good coffee.
Private consulting began by client request, but demand grew rapidly. By 2004, we found that we couldn't address the increasingly varied needs of our clients as well in our classroom, so we gave up our 97th Street location and brought the classroom to our clients instead.
In 2011, in collaboration with MBA, mom and fellow technophile Diane Koones, we are introducing new small group workshops dedicated to hot topics like Travel Technology. Join us!
